Rustic headboard – Choose a headboard style. Good sources of a headboard like this are second hand stores, garage sales and estate sales. Then, clean and sand the headboard. Use a wet, soapy cloth to clean the headboard well, including crevices where dust often collects. Paint the headboard. Choose a paint color that complements your room.

Use an oil-based paint on all surfaces of the headboard, and use two layers, if necessary, to achieve the perfect base from coast to your preferences. Let the paint dry. Use coarse grit sandpaper to sand the corners and edges. Sand any square corners or edges. Imagine the bed, you work with were decades old. Ask yourself, what surface would be rubbed against encountered often or otherwise worn on all sides of the rustic headboard.

Sand these areas until the wood shows through. Do not be afraid of over-grinding. There is no right or wrong at this stage. Lacquer finish. When the bed is enough rustic, seal the surface with lacquer. You can choose a flat surface for a truly rustic look, or you can add shine using a semi gloss or gloss finish paint. Allow to dry completely. Add nail head trim or use a strong glue to adhere designs in rope, rice or other materials to your rustic headboard.
